Appropriate archiving protects documented materials. It also makes them accessible to specific audiences. Archiving is essential to securely and accurately transmitting language data across generations and across user groups.
D = Documentation [D-tagged workshops]
Documentation is one of the most fundamental activities in language work. Understanding best practices in language documentation is essential to being an ethical language worker. The term is broad, and may describe many different things, from video recording to transcribing archival material and more. CoLang workshops that contain information about documentation will focus on documentation in a community-based, collaborative context.
E = Ethics [E-tagged workshops]
Adhering to a code of ethics in language documentation, whether working in your own community or any other one, is of paramount importance. Ethical training is especially critical to anyone working in a community-based, collaborative context. Ethics involves an understanding of reciprocity, accountability, transparency, and sensitivity to cultural practices and protocols, alongside behavior that exhibits respect for the human beings around you, their knowledge, and their worldviews. CoLang workshops that contain information about ethics will focus on the importance of formalizing and defending concepts of right and wrong behavior in community-based, collaborative language work.
G = Grant related [G-tagged workshops]
Language work often requires financial support. Grants are one way to secure funding needed to carry out a project - large or small. Many countries have federal and local funds to support work on endangered languages. Learning to write grant proposals to support language work is a skill that can be developed over time. CoLang workshops focused on grant writing will highlight ways that this can be a collaborative activity, and how to do so in community-based contexts.
I = Interdisciplinary [I-tagged workshops]
Language work becomes more meaningful when it is understood as not only the documentation of linguistic information, but of language as a carrier of cultural knowledge. For example, the documentation of Traditional Ecological Knowledge involves many disciplines. CoLang workshops that are tagged ‘Interdisciplinary’ will explore the impact of varied fields, such as math, botany, astronomy, geography, computer science, education, etc. on language work.
P = Pedagogy [P-tagged workshops]
CoLang workshops tagged with ‘P’ include content particularly beneficial to language teachers, language learners, and those who work with educators. They will focus on responding to the varied needs of teachers of Indigenous languages. P workshops are also encouraged for any CoLang participant, especially non-community members, as it is always important to be aware of the specific interests, needs, and issues among the community they work with. CoLang workshops that contain information on pedagogy will enhance participants’ training in collaborative community-based research.
T = Technology [T-tagged workshops]
CoLang offers several workshops involving training in technology which supports language work. Examples of the application of technologies which support transcription of sounds, morpho-syntactic features or conversations, audio and video recording, and software for audio-video editing and dictionary development are included.
