22. Math Knowledge in Indigenous Language Worldview

Aiming to support language revitalization, reclamation, documentation, and Indigenous ways of knowing, this workshop introduces participants to ways of exploring math knowledge in Indigenous language worldview, with the specific example of Tłıch̨ ǫ, a Dene language of the Northwest Territories. Increasingly, the significance of Indigenous concepts is being recognized in science classrooms. This workshop provides an entry into discussion of Indigenous science through exploration of Indigenous knowledge of mathematics. This information can be used in discussions and documentation of many science topics, including sewing, carpentry, medicine preparation, cooking, hunting, fishing, farming, foraging, geography, biology, astronomy, and more. As the facilitators have been collaborating in language work since 1986, we will model respect, reciprocity, and accountability through our example.
