19. Language Reclamation

Language reclamation prioritizes community needs and perspectives, incorporates wider, decolonial goals, and avoids treating language as an object. This workshop will build a sound foundation in principles of reclamation and how they can be applied to designing, implementing, and assessing Indigenous language work. It incorporates concepts and ideas from the fields of Indigenous Language Revitalization, Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Education, Linguistics, and Language Documentation.

It is aimed at anyone and everyone who has engaged with or is hoping to engage with community-based Indigenous language work, including community language warriors, Indigenous language reclamation practitioners, and theoretical and applied linguists, among others.

The first day of the workshop will provide an introduction to the principles of language reclamation, as differentiated from other models of Indigenous language work. The three following workshop sessions will cover designing (Day 2), implementing (Day 3), and assessing (Day 4) Indigenous language work through a reclamation lens.

Participants will be expected to engage in discussion and small group activities throughout the workshop. We ask that participants come to the workshop with open minds and good hearts.
