Financial Support

Limited scholarships are available. Applications for LSA CoLang scholarships and CoLang 2022 Internal Scholarship will be accepted beginning in February 2022. 

We also encourage interested participants to explore other sources of funding. Please consult this online session on 'Finding Funding for CoLang 2022.'

CoLang 2022 Internal Scholarship

A small number of scholarships is available. Recipients of this scholarship will receive one or some combination of: a waiver for registration for the two weeks of workshops (June 13-24), two weeks of housing in a shared dorm room on campus, and two weeks of breakfast, lunch and dinner on campus (does not include weekends). All recipients are required to attend a special event on the afternoon of Sunday, June 12, plus a full schedule of workshops during the two week period.

You are eligible to apply for this scholarship if you will be at least 18 years of age prior to June 13, 2022, and you are not the recipient of a CoLang scholarship from the Linguistic Society of America or the Endangered Language Fund. 

The online application form is now open and will be closed on March 31 (11:59PM MDT) closed. 

The CoLang Spirit is to encourage and facilitate greater representation of Indigenous people and Indigenous languages, both at the institute and in other language work. With this in mind, Indigenous applicants are particularly encouraged to apply.

Linguistic Society of America Scholarship

The Linguistic Society of America (LSA) offers the Emmon Bach Fellowship and the CoLang Scholarship. Applicants must be student members of the LSA. Nonmembers may join the LSA through their website. Applications can be submitted after the 2022 LSA meeting.

  • The Emmon Bach Fellowship is a named fellowship which covers travel, lodging, and a meal plan during the workshops and practica at CoLang 2022. There will be one successful candidate for this fellowship. Applicants for this fellowship will also be considered for the CoLang Scholarship. The person awarded this fellowship is expected to attend the full duration CoLang 2022 (June 13-July 8 - the full two weeks of workshops, and full two weeks of a practicum).
  • The CoLang Scholarship award is available to fund several students' participation. The award will cover partial CoLang expenses such as registration (registration includes tuition), lodging, or meal plan for the two weeks of workshops (June 13-June 24) at CoLang 2022.

Deadline

Scholarship/fellowship applications are due Friday, February 14, 2022 (11:59pm MST). Notifications will be sent out in mid-March by March 21. Awardees must complete registration by March 31, 2022.

To apply for the LSA Fellowship and Scholarship

Go to the LSA website, and clink on the link "Apply for the Emmon Bach and CoLang Student FellowshipsApply by February". To complete your application, you will be asked for information about your academic background, including a degree earned or in progress. You will also be asked about your experience with language documentation and language revitalization, for example, description of your experience with any of the following:

  • working with speakers of or archival material in an endangered language,
  • other language activities (e.g., language learning or teaching, formal or informal mentoring, using archives or previous recordings, recording languages through video, audio, or writing),
  • language continuity, revival or revitalization,
  • archival research, and
  • any additional relevant experience.

You must also submit a statement of purpose in no more than 500 words explaining why you want to attend CoLang 2022, how the Institute can help further your studies, what you have to bring to CoLang, and what difference it would make to you if you receive a scholarship. Please include a description of your commitment to use your learnings from CoLang in the future. 

You will also be asked to give the names of two people who can write letters of recommendation for you. The letter writers must send the letters to lsa@lsadc.org by the same deadline (February 14, 2022).

If you are also applying for the Emmon Bach Fellowship, you must submit an additional statement, in no more than 500 words, responding to one of the two following prompts:

  1. Please describe a particular challenge you have faced as a language worker, student, or teacher and how you envision certain workshops (name them) and the community fostered at CoLang could help support you address that challenge.
  2. Please describe what you have to contribute to CoLang that would enhance it.

Endangered Language Fund Scholarship

Scholarships for CoLang 2022 from the Endangered Language Fund (ELF) will be rolled over to the scholarship recipients for the CoLang 2020. Currently, there is no plan to accept any additional applications for CoLang 2022.
