Gear Up

IRSE was awarded funding from Montana Gear Up to conduct STEM camps in summers 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.  Led by a team of UM STEM faculty and graduate students, the camps provided exciting STEM activities during one week of instruction at each site.

  • 2013:  hosted by Blackfeet Community College (BCC) and Aaniiih Nakoda College to serve middle school students residing on the Blackfeet and Fort Belknap Reservations.
  • 2014:  hosted by Chief Dull Knife College and Hardin Middle School to serve students residing on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations.
  • 2016:  hosted by Blackfeet Community College to serve students residing on the reservation.
  • 2017:  hosted by Hardin Middle School and Aaniiih Nakoda College to serve middle school students residing on the Crow and Fort Belknap Reservations.

Among the many activities scheduled, students designed and launched rockets, built and flew hot air balloons, constructed roller coasters, constructed Mars rovers out of art supplies, and extracted DNA from strawberries.  Each activity centered on instruction in a variety of STEM disciplines.
