Graduate Student Scholarship & Traineeship Opportunities

School of SLHOS Scholarships: Application Deadline is Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024, 11:59pm (MST)

There are two department-specific scholarships available for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year:

  1. The Walter and Elaine Anderson Scholarship Fund (Award: $1700)
    • Criteria: Any incoming first-year graduate students and current graduate students are eligible to apply.
  2. Meech-Swank Family Scholarship for the School of Speech, Language, Hearing, and Occupational Sciences (Award: $1000)
    • Criteria: Any incoming first-year graduate students and current graduate students are eligible to apply. However, recipients must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office or its equivalent in existence at the time of the award and be a resident of the State of Montana.

HOW TO APPLY:

Current UM Students: Complete a General Application in the UM Scholarship Portal. Do NOT answer the personal statement in the UM Scholarship Portal and do NOT put your letter of recommendation in the Portal. You will instead fill out the Submittable application as well as upload your letter of support and essay. 

All other applicants: If you are not a current UM Student, you are still eligible to apply. Fill out the Submittable application first. If you are awarded the scholarship and have received and accepted admission into UM Graduate School, then you will be prompted to fill out a General Application in the UM Scholarship Portal.

Please apply using our Submittable link (link is now live for the 2024-2025 Scholarship cycle).

You will be required to submit the following in the Submittable application:

  • Cumulative GPA
  • Overall GPA for CSD/SLP specific courses
  • Resume
  • Essay (2-page maximum)
    • Essay prompt: Reflect on a moment that sparked your interest in becoming a speech-language pathologist. Describe the impact of this experience on your decision to pursue a Master's in SLP. Additionally, discuss the importance of cultivating a culturally responsive practice in both your studies and future career; how do you envision growing and using your skills to support individuals with communication disorders while considering cultural and cognitive diversity?
  • Letter of Support (One letter of support from someone who can endorse your scholarship request. This must be someone outside of the School of SLHOS faculty or staff).

SIMS (Specialized Interventionists for Montana Schools) Scholars

Funded by OSEP (Office of Special Education Programs), SIMS (Specialized Interventionists for Montana Schools) Scholars is an opportunity for future special educators and speech-language pathologists to be fully funded through their programs (2 years). In return, they work for Montana schools for four years. Find more information and the application to the SIMS Scholars here and apply by April 3, 2024.

The Montana Speech-Language & Hearing Foundation Scholarship

The Montana Speech-Language & Hearing Foundation Scholarship honors the dedication and service of speech language pathologists and audiologists in our state by offering financial support to graduate students at the University of Montana. There are two $1000 scholarships awards. This scholarship is available to graduate students majoring in Speech-Language Pathology, who are currently enrolled and/or admitted. Please note, you do not have to plan to work in Montana following graduation to apply, and there are no restrictions for applying more than once! Application deadline is April 29th, 2024. The Office of Public Instruction (OPI) Speech-Language Pathology Master’s Traineeship

This traineeship was created to defer the costs of master’s level coursework and ensure that newly qualifies speech-language pathologists work in Montana schools for at least two years after completing the program. This is NOT a scholarship opportunity; it is a reimbursement stipend provided for the successful completion of master’s level speech-language coursework. Acceptance into the OPI Master’s Traineeship will be given to those applicants who have been accepted into a speech-language pathology master’s program and are committed to working in a Montana public school for at least two years after completing the program. Trainees may be eligible for up to $3,000 per fiscal year (July 1-June 30). For more information contact Annette Young: Ayoung3@mt.gov
