OUTSTANDING AFI - QUESTIONS:

What degrees do you have, and where did you earn them?
I have my Bachelor of Science in Community Health from UM. I am also a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach.

What is your current role at your organization?
I am the Wellness Director at the Curry Health Center at UM.

How did you come to work at your organization?
I started working in the Wellness department as a student in 2009 and have never left. I have spent the bulk of my career as a Wellness coach supporting students’ health and well-being.

What do you appreciate most about supervising practicum students?
Supervising these practicum students has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. They are all so motivated, ready to learn, and enthusiastic about their roles. They have been willing to step up and do things that push them out of their comfort zones, and I feel honored to be a part of their professional growth.

What does being a social worker mean to you?
It means empowering and supporting individuals to be the best versions of themselves.

How does your role as a social worker relate to your role as a supervisor?
I see my role as the Wellness Director/Wellness coach and my role as a supervisor as the same. My goal in both is to support people in reaching their full potential and prioritizing their well-being. I am a strong believer in authentic leadership. I show up in both roles in a way that I hope people feel like they can relate to and feel inspired to do the same.

What is the most important thing you hope your practicum students take with them into their careers?
Being able to leverage this experience with a pilot program and the skills they have gained in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity to navigate challenges and innovative solutions. In addition, I hope they feel a sense of purpose and empowerment to do this work. Finally, I hope they continue to lean on the cohort of peers and me for ongoing support throughout their professional careers.
