Degree Works

Advisors, administrators, faculty and staff may request access to Degree Works by submitting an Advising Security Request Form

  • Limit the amount of words in each petition. There is no need for lengthy descriptions. Keep it simple. Tell us the requirement being petitioned and the course that should be applied or if the requirement is being waived. Examples:
    • Substitute M 121 for M 115.
    • Waive BIOB 201N.
  • Petitions are for major, minor, concentration, and certificate requirements only. General Education Requirements cannot be petitioned. Those usually require the submission of an appeal to the Graduation Appeals Committee. If you see issues with a General Education Requirements on a student's audit, please notify a Graduation Coordinator at graduation@umontana.edu
  • Petitions should be added as they are identified, usually at the beginning of a student’s enrollment. Please do not wait until the graduating semester to add petitions. This makes it difficult for students and advisors to track student progress and could delay the awarding of degrees.
  • Do not submit a petition for a requirement that doesn't appear on an audit. If a student's major needs to be updated, please email the request to graduation@umontana.edu and wait for the update to be processed before submitting. If the petitioned requirement does not appear on the student's audit, the petition will be rejected.
  • Do not submit a petition for a course that does not appear on the students audit; for example: transfer work that has not yet been articulated on a student's transcript. If the course does not appear, the petition will be rejected.
    • There are, however, two exceptions to this:
      • If the student transferred a baccalaureate degree from another institution, individual courses will not be articulated. They will appear as a block of 120 credits on the student audit. An advisor will need to review the transcripts and evaluate the transfer work, then submit a petition saying something like "HSTA 422 completed as part of previous degree." (Feel free to provide more detail about the course and degree.)
      • If the student will be taking a course in the future at UM, you don't have to wait. We just need to know the course number.
  • Please direct any questions to graduation@umontana.edu.

You can notify the Registrar's Office of problems with Degree Works by emailing graduation@umontana.edu.
