observatory dome at sunset with several people aroundThe observatory is about 1/4 mile from where parking is, down a rocky dirt road that doesn’t have too much of an incline but is quite rocky and uneven. If you need accommodation to park closer to the observatory that can be arranged ahead of the event, but keep in mind that this little section of road is not suitable for vehicles with low clearance.

At the observatory - there are a few stairs from ground level up to where the main telescope is, inside the dome. Outside the dome there is usually at least one additional telescope set up as well, on the rocky dirt ground. For any telescope at BMO, the height and angle of the eyepiece is dependent on the object’s position in the sky— standing on a step stool or squatting down may be necessary for some observations.

There is a Forest Service outhouse facility available a short walk from the dome, either through vegetation without much incline or over a rocky path with steep incline.

You may find this photo from a 2019 staff training event helpful, but please keep in mind that this is a dynamic, remote environment that receives regular recreational daytime use as well as whatever Mother Nature sends.
