Tours

The Montana Museum of Art and Culture holds a variety of daily tours, led by our team of community docents, and by artists from the greater Montana area. These tours are free and open to the public.

If you would like to schedule a personalized or private tour, please contact our operations manager Peggy Nesbitt at peggy.nesbitt@mso.umt.edu. Please note that tours and events scheduled outside museum hours will accrue rental and operations fees.

For their special topics tours, our cohort of docents throughly research and craft engaging investigations of particular works, themes, mediums, or periods of art history.  

June 6th: Len Maynard, "Peggy's Kids: The Inordinate Influence of Peggy Guggenheim on Modern Art"
Maynard will discuss the collecting habits of Peggy Guggenheim and how she shaped the world of modern art both in and out of the MMAC.

June 13th: Dolly Browder, “Following the Lead: Young Montana Women Artists”
Browder will discuss a generation of young female artists based in Montana, and their values, concerns, and methods.

June 20th: Cay Drew, "What's in a Name? How Titles Affect Our Perception"
Drew will discuss the titles and content of a number of pieces in the MMAC's collection, as well as the artists' intentions and effects of the title on viewers' interpretations. 

July 11th: Debra Pollard and Greg Timmons, "Portraits"
Pollard and Timmons will examine a number of portraits on display, as well as the larger genre of portraiture as an art form.

July 18th: Cay Drew, "What's in a Name? How Titles Affect Our Perception"
Drew will discuss the titles and content of a number of pieces in the MMAC's collection, as well as the artists' intentions and effects of the title on viewers' interpretations. 

July 25th: Jean Belangie-Nye, "Rembrandt to Armstrong: Prints in the MMAC Collection"
Belangie-Nye will examine a number of prints held at the MMAC, as well as their media and methods. 

August 1st: Tom Bensen, "Birds of a Feather: Local Artists Alongside the Masters"
Bensen will present a discussion that pairs beloved local artists and well-known masters in the Permanent Collection. 

August 8th: Jean Belangie-Nye, "Amphora to Autio: Ceramics in the MMAC Collection"
Belangie-Nye will examine a selection of ceramic objects at the MMAC, their artistic methods, and the legacy of ceramic work here in Montana. 

August 15th: Cay Drew, “Listening to Art: A Sense of Sound”
Drew will encourage a conversation about the sense of sound as expressed and evoked in works of visual art.

August 22nd: Mary Engstrom, "Art as Storytelling"
Engstrom will examine a series of works that focus on relating a narrative to the viewer.
