Prerequisite and Corequisite Course Requirements

Prerequisite Courses

Transfer Credits and grades are accepted only from courses that are transferable from regionally-accredited colleges and universities. 

BIOH 201/202: Human Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab

This course must be 4 semester credits and include a lab. You must earn a B- grade or better.

BIOH 211/212: Human Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab

This course must be 4 semester credits and include a lab. You must earn a B- grade or better.

CHMY 121: Introduction to General Chemistry

CHMY 122: Introduction to General Chemistry Lab

Transfer and higher-level chemistry courses with accompanying lab must be reviewed by the Nursing Program Director for determination if they are acceptable substitutions. Course must total a minimum of 4 credits by: 

  • 3 credits for lecture and 1 credit for lab
  • 4 credits for lecture and 1 credit for lab OR
  • 4-5 credit combined lecture and lab section

M 121: College Algebra

An acceptable math course greater than 10 years old, must be supplemented by taking a UM math placement test, scoring to at least the math level above the course itself in order for the nursing program to accept the grade from that course. Other acceptable courses include: M 115: Linear & Probability, M 140: Math for Health Professions, M 151: Pre-calculus, M 162: Applied Calculus, and M 171: Calculus I. Minimum 3 credits.

WRIT 101: College Writing

An acceptable math course greater than 10 years old, must be supplemented by taking a UM writing placement test, and placing into WRIT 201 in order for the nursing program to accept the grade from that course. Other acceptable courses include: College Composition and English Composition. Minimum 3 credits.

Total Prerequisite Credits: 18 credits

Corequisite Courses

It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that students take the corequisites listed below (required to graduate) prior to entering the program because there may be schedule conflicts with nursing clinical due to access to hospital availability AND it will set you up for SUCCESS in the nursing program!

  • Transfer Credits and grades are accepted only from courses that are transferable from regionally-accredited colleges and universities.
  • General Education Courses: * below indicates courses that meet Missoula College and UM general education requirements.
  • Minimum Grade Requirements: a minimum grade of C is required for all corequisite courses.

Corequisite courses can be taken along with nursing core courses.

BIOM 250N: Microbiology for Health Sciences

BIOM 251: Microbiology for Health Sciences Lab 

Please note that these two courses are only offered during spring term. Acceptable alternatives must have microbiology in the title and must have content that is related to the medical field. Course must total a minimum of 4 credits by: 

  • 3 credits for lecture and 1 credit for lab
  • 4 credits for a combined lecture and lab 

PSYX 100S: Introduction to Psychology

General psychology may also be substituted here, but no other higher level psychology courses will be accepted as a replacement. Minimum 3 credits. 

SOCI 101S: Introduction to Sociology

Principles of sociology may also be substituted here. Minimum of 3 credits.
