Friends of the Herbarium

Our Mission

The Mission of the Friends of the Herbarium (FOH) is to secure support for and enrich the collections and operations of the UM Herbarium. FOH was founded in 1995 to provide advocacy and fund raising for the well-being of the UM Herbarium. Since its inception, FOH has purchased 17 new cabinets and provided an honorarium for a volunteer to work part-time in the herbarium.

A current goal is to database all of the collections in the herbarium, making record keeping, data inquiries, and label-making more efficient and accurate for herbarium users. The Montana Native Plant Society provides annual financial support to FOH. Membership in the Friends of the Herbarium is $15 for two years, and includes delivery of the annual newsletter.

The FOH newsletter reports on a variety of topics of interest to collectors and data users.  Past articles inlude exploration of the little known history of the herbarium collections, and profiles of contributing botanists from the past and present.  The newletter always updates members on ongoing activities within the herbarium. Current and past editions of the newsletter are available in digital form.

Please support the MONTU collections by joining Friends of the Herbarium.

Stickney Herbarium Endowment

Generous contributions by Peter Stickney and many others have resulted in the establishment of the University of Montana Herbarium Endowment.  It is fondly refered to by most members as "The Stickney Endowment."  Peter's hope in creating the Endowment is the installation of a full-time herbarium curator to manage and oversee MONTU's diverse collections.

Help build the Endowment by sending contributions to:
