External Scholarships and Funding

Many DBS students have received scholarships and funding for undergraduate research from external sources. Further, DBS students commonly participate in competitive summer research programs at other universities The following is a list of some of the many scholarships, fellowships, internships, and funding resources available to students in biological sciences.

Scholarships

Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program
The Goldwater Scholarship offers $7500 to students in science, math, and engineer fields who are seeking a career in research. 

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program funds federal PELL grant-eligible minority students in multiple fields. 

Novus Biologicals Scholarship Program
Novus Biologicals awards $1500 to one student each semester (fall and spring) in the life sciences community.

Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Program
Thermo Scientific offers up to $10000 to students in both fall and spring semesters. 

Research Funding and Small Grants

Libbie H. Hyman Memorial Scholarship
The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology offers $1500-$3500 to support field research experience for first or second year graduates or advanced undergraduates.

Montana Native Plants Society Small Grants Program
The Montana Native Plants Society offers small grants to support research, conservation, and educational activities regarding Montana's native plants.  

National Geographic Young Explorers Grants
National Geographic awards small grants to individuals from 18-25 to pursue research, conservation, and exploration. 

Sigma Xi Grant-In-Aid Program
Earn up to $1000 in funding for a research project in all areas of science and engineering, with up to $5000 awarded to astronomy-related projects and $2500 awarded to vision-related projects. 

Fellowships, Internships, and Summer Programs

Fulbright Summer Institutes for Undergraduates
Do research at a highly acclaimed university in the UK for the summer. The Institute will cover cost of airfaire, tuition, and housing throughout the course of the program. 

Janelia Undergraduate Scholars Program
The Janaleia Undergraduate Scholars Program is a 10 week internship in Neurobiology at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute

ASM Future Leaders Fellowship
The American Society of Microbiology Future Leaders Fellowship designed to support master's and doctoral graduate students from underrepresented groups. 

National Amgen Scholars
Find a summer research program in science or biotechnology through Amgen Scholars. Programs are held at many premier educational institutions worldwide. 

Pathways to Science
Pathways to Science provides scholarships and other funding to groups that are typically underrepresented in STEM fields.

Pasteur Foundation Summer Internship Program
Conduct a summer reserach project in biomedical research at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
Get funded by the National Science Foundation to do summer research! REUs applications are by institution. Many institutions worldwide in a variety of fields offer REUs.  

Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)
Travel to Gernmany for a three month summer research program at a top university. 

SENS Research Foundation Summer Internships
Research internships in renerative medicine are offered at multiple disireable locations through the SENS Research Foundation. 

Summer Internship Program (SIP)
Funded by the National Institute of Health, SIP provides funding for students interested in biomedical research.

Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP)
The Leadership Alliance provides funding to students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in research careers.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
The Sackler Institute at the NYU School of Medecine offers a summer research program for sophomores and juniors interested in pursuing their MD, MD/PhD, or PhD and a career in research.
