Exam Format:

The TOEFL iBT consists of four (4) sections measuring the examinee's strength in the following categories:

Scores:

The TOEFL iBT test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points. Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) receives a scaled score from 0 to 30. The scaled scores from the four sections are added together to determine the total score. Each speaking question is initially given a score of 0 to 4, and each writing question is initially given a score of 0 to 5. These scores are converted to scaled scores of 0 to 30.

Exam Preparation:

The University of Montana Testing Services does not endorse any test preparation company.  Candidates may access study guides and TOEFL iBT Sample Questions from the ETS Web Site: https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt-enhancements/prep.html  Candidates may purchase TOEFL preparation books at many bookstores including The Bookstore at the University of Montana. 

Registration:

You may register for the TOEFL iBT on-line at: http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/register or by contacting the ETS call center at 1-800-468-6335.  When scheduling your test appointment, be sure the spelling of your name and the date of birth you provide match EXACTLY the name and date of birth printed on the identification you will present at the test center.  If this information does not match, you will not be admitted and you will forfeit your entire test fee.  

Cost:

Cost is currently $205.  Visit the web site https://www.ets.org/toefl to obtain current information on test and service fee(s). 

Identification Requirements

You must present acceptable and valid original identification (ID) to be admitted to the Test Center.  If you do not present appropriate ID, you will not be admitted to the Test Center and will forfeit your entire test fee.  Your identification must be current (not expired), legible, bear your name in the Roman alphabet exactly as provided when you made your test appointment. It must be an original ID (no photocopies) and must include a recent recognizable photograph, your signature, and the date of birth you provided at registration.

 Important Information

• You may arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled TOEFL iBT appointment.
• Cellular phones, beepers, cameras, and all photographic, communication, computer, and electronic devices are strictly prohibited in the testing room and must remain off throughout the exam.
• Food, drinks, gum, candy, and all tobacco products are not permitted in the testing room.
• Personal items such as watches, wallets, purses, hats, bags, or coats, etc. are not allowed in the testing room.
• Additional breaks are allowed at the examinee’s discretion. However, the test will not be paused and time will continue to expire.
• You are not allowed to access your cell phone or study materials during the test, including during your breaks.
• Approximately 10 business days after the test date, examinees can view their scores online at https://www.ets.org/toefl. TOEFL iBT scores are posted to the website only, unless the examinee has selected the paper copy option on the
• “Score Reporting Preferences” screen in their online profile. ETS will also send a score report to up to four institutions
• or agencies that the examinee designated when registering for the test.
• Test takers can still repeat the test as many times as they wish, but only once within a 21-day period.

Accommodated Testing for Students with Disabilities

Testing accommodations are available for examinees with disabilities that meet certain criteria and provide proper documentation.  If you are requesting nonstandard testing accommodations, you must have them approved prior to testing.
