Summer Bridge = 9 credits

SW 500 Orientation    1 cr. 
Seminar introducing M.S.W. students to program philosophy and social work’s theory and value base.

SW 505 Foundations of Social Work Practice    2 cr. 
Introductory practice course that examines generalist social work practice, dominant theoretical influences, and forces shaping social work over time.

SW 532 Indian Child Welfare Act    1 cr.
This course will provide students with an understanding of the Indian Child Welfare Act including the historical events leading to its passage and contemporary issues surrounding implementation of the law. Students will apply knowledge of the law to practice and build skills on working across cultural differences in order to promote the best interest of American Indian children and families. 

SW 591 Social Welfare and Justice in Historical Context    2 cr. 
Introduction to social welfare policy and services; examination of relationship between the history of social welfare policy and emergence of the social work profession; exploration of history of struggles for human rights and social and economic justice in US context. Introduction to frameworks for policy analysis.

SW 591 Critical Skills in Integrated Social Work Practice    3 cr. 
A refresher on the theories, frameworks, principles and skills of individual, group, and community practice. It builds on the integrative model of social work knowledge and the skills students developed in BSW coursework and field education, and expands on these for effective individual, group, and community work.

SW 521 Advanced Research and Program Evaluation    3 cr. 
The use of research within the integrated practice model of social work through evaluation of practice and program evaluation. Advanced statistical concepts are applied to direct practice and five types of program evaluation.

SW 535 Advanced Integrated Practice    4 cr. 
Builds on the skills, knowledge, and values of the foundation generalist and practice courses.

SW 578 Advanced Integrative Seminar I    1 cr. 
Critical analysis of how predominant social work theories and professional values and skills are being incorporated into the practicum.

SW 588 Concentration Practicum I    3 cr. 
Advanced supervised field work in public and private agencies and institutions.

Specialization Year: SPRING SEMESTER = 11 CREDITS + ELECTIVE

SW 531 Methods of Social Policy Analysis    3 cr. 
Focus on the analysis of existing or proposed policies specific to oppressed populations, rural areas and isolated communities.

SW 545 Practice of Organizational Leadership    3 cr. 
Advanced training in professional leadership and how to effectively conceive, plan, design, implement, manage, assess, and change contemporary organizations.

SW 579 Advanced Integrative Seminar II    1 cr. 
Critical analysis of how predominant social work theories and professional values and skills are being incorporated into the practicum. Advanced portfolio development.

SW 589 Concentration Practicum II    3 cr. 
Advanced supervised field work in public and private agencies and institutions.

SW 599 Professional Portfolio    1 cr. 
Summative and in-depth written analysis of course work and practicum experience.
