Flooding over the upper Midwest observed from the NASA SMAP satellite, which provides enhanced microwave (L-band) sensitivity to surface water (fw) within a coarse (~36-km) sensor footprint. The image sequence (top) shows fw cover from Feb 25- Mar 3, 2019 prior to an historic “bomb cyclone” event. The middle image shows the fw cover from March 10-16, 2019 during the intense cyclone, while the right image shows the fw increase from extensive snowmelt and rainfall driven flooding. The animation (right) shows finer (30m) scale flooding for a selected sub-region obtained from complimentary satellite data (Landsat, Sentinel-1).
