Scholarship/Fellowship Grant - Procedure

Definitions

A scholarship is an amount paid for the benefit of a student (undergraduate or graduate) to aid in the pursuit of studies at The University of Montana.

A fellowship is an amount paid for the benefit of an individual to aid in the pursuit of study or research.

Qualified Scholarship/Fellowship Grants

A qualified scholarship or fellowship grant is any amount received as a scholarship or fellowship that is used under the terms of the grant for:

  • tuition and fees required to enroll in, or to attend The University of Montana
  • fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at The University of Montana

Qualified scholarship/fellowship grants are tax free only if the recipient is a candidate for a degree: defined as a student (full- or part-time) pursuing a degree (bachelors or higher) at The University of Montana.

Payment for Services

Any scholarship or fellowship grant, in whole or in part, that represents payment for services must be included in income and is subject to taxation.
