POLICY

In an effort to foster upward mobility of its non-faculty contract professional employees, the University of Montana has implemented a promotion plan for contract professional positions.  A department with a vacant Regent's contract position may utilize one of the three recruitment options described in the relevant Procedures.

Once an option has been selected, the hiring authority must complete all steps outlined in the procedure.  If a candidate is not chosen, another option may then be selected.

PROCEDURE

A department with a vacancy may hire a staff employee utilizing one of two recruitment options.  Human Resource Services will assist departments in determining the most viable choice.  Factors to be considered when determining which option to select include, the job duties and responsibilities of the position, the availability of eligible applicants within a recruitment pool, and special recruitment needs.

Campus-Wide Promotion

  • Any current employee of the University of Montana may apply for the position, regardless of employee type.  The employee selected for the position must meet the minimum qualifications for the position as specified in the vacancy announcement.
  • The recruitment period must consist of a minimum of seven (7) calendar days which would minimally cover one weekend.

Open (External) Recruitment

  • Applications are accepted from any person interested in applying for the position. The recruitment period must consist of a minimum of seven (7) calendar days which would minimally cover one weekend.

Salaries

  • Salaries for contract professional and contract administrator positions are determined by the hiring authority according to campus and Board of Regents’ guidelines.
