UM researchers keep outdoing themselves when it comes to bringing in grants for their work. Funded research topped $39 million for fiscal year 2000, an increase from $31.4 million in fiscal year 1999.

President George Dennison has called for external research funding to reach $50 million by 2005. Grant funding has increased each year during Dennison’s tenure, which began in 1990 (see graph).

Two internationally renowned scientists — biological sciences Adjunct Research Professor Jerry Bromenshenk, known for his use of honeybees to detect environmental pollutants, and forestry Professor Steve Running, whose team wrote software for NASA’s Terra satellite, top the list as the University’s highest funded researchers. Each brought in more than $2 million in external funding during fiscal year 2000.
