Academic Policy and Procedures

As part of The University of Montana's commitment to academic excellence, Academic Affairs is actively engaged in assessment and review of our academic programs. These processes are ongoing and include the following activities:

Assessment

Assessment is the process of evaluating the effectiveness of a department's curriculum. Each department formulates a set of goals and objectives and analyzes progress over time. Assessment is an ongoing activity, and each department prepares an assessment report biennially.

Program Review

Program Review is a process completed by each academic unit every seven years on a rotating schedule. The Program Review includes a self-study report and a review by an external evaluator.

Curriculum & Program Approval

The University continually adapts its curriculum to meet the needs of students. Proposed changes to curriculum and programs must be reviewed and approved by several entities within UM and, depending on the extent of the change, the Board of Regents.

Unit Standards

Each department maintains a set of unit standards. A department's unit standards, in conjunction with the pertinent collective bargaining agreement, set forth the performance standards for the faculty of the department.

Center Review

There are numerous centers within the University, each serving a special purpose. Centers are evaluated every five years according to a rotating schedule to ensure continued effectiveness.

Department Reports

To review the most recent Assessment Report or Unit Standards for any academic unit, you may view the Department Reports. Also included is a Program Description for each academic department.
