Supported Laptops

Now is the time to buy a laptop for law school.

WHY BUY A SUPPORTED LAPTOP?

You will find the laptops we support below. We strongly encourage UM law students to purchase one of the laptop computers we support.

  • You will use your laptop extensively both in and out of class. The supported models are configured to provide the features law students need most. However, please note that the use of computers is not pedagogically appropriate in all classes (particularly those that focus on class discussion). Faculty have the right to restrict the use of the Internet and to limit computer use in their classes.

  • As a service to students, we are certified to provide full-warranty service for supported computers. If you purchase a supported computer, the warranty will cover full factory-authorized, next-day hardware warranty service, which in most cases we will provide in-house. As long as you are a law student, if your computer breaks, all you have to do is bring it to us; if for some reason we cannot fix it by the next day, the manufacturer will send somebody who can. We also provide in-house software support on supported models.

  • We do not provide any warranty or support services for non-supported laptops. If your computer breaks, you will have to take it to a local computer repair shop or send it to an authorized service center. The Law School does not have laptops to loan while yours is being repaired.

Additionally, we strongly encourage you to purchase your laptop from the UM Bookstore or Richards Computer so that you can take advantage of the pre-configured packages they offer law students that include in-house warranty service. If you want to purchase a non-supported model or a supported model from another source, you must make sure your computer strictly meets the Minimum Laptop Recommendations, especially regarding the warranty. We cannot provide warranty service on computers that do not meet these minimum specifications. Again, we do not provide any service or support on non-supported laptops even if they meet the Minimum Laptop Recommendations.

Full Support Includes Software Installation
When you purchase one of the supported computers the law school IT staff will pre-configure your computer with all recommended application software and updates (you must purchase Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft OneNote 2007, but we will install the software). We will also install software required for wireless connectivity at the law school as well as drivers and utilities you will need for your course work. In addition we will include all of the Internet bookmarks (favorites) you will need for legal research and for access to all other law school resources.

Other Useful Tools We Recommend

CruzerPortable date storage (USB drives, flash drives, pen drives, thumb drives). Richards Computer has USB drives available for $22 for 4GB of memory, or $44 for 8GB.

iPod -- Recommended for class podcasts and music storage

  • Class podcasts: Many law school classes are podcast and may be accessed using any laptop computer, but iPods are the best choice for portable access to law school podcasts. (Note: Podcasts will be limited Fall Semester 2008).

  • Music storage: We strongly recommended against storing large quantities of music on the laptop computer you depend upon for law school use. Doing so will slow your computer's response time and make it more difficult and time consuming to recover from a system failure. IT staff will not recover music files from crashed systems.

Carrying Case. Only the Dell computers come with cases. We recommend ordering a case with all other models, or purchasing a case locally.

In addition to these tools we recommend, there are other tools you may want to purchase including peripherals (printers, mice, etc.) and carrying cases. For these items, visit the UM Bookstore or Richards Computer.

Computer Ordering Information

To Order

Dell Latitude XT Tablet and Dell Latitude D630: Order from the UM Bookstore.

All Toshiba and Lenovo models: Order from Richards Computer.

Delivery

If you purchase any of the laptops we recommend your laptop will be sent to the UM School of Law (no shipping cost). We will set up these machines and configure them for law school use. We are happy to hold them until you arrive in Missoula. All Toshiba models should arrive within 5-10 days of order; Lenovos should arrive within 14-21 days.

Order Early

Supported computers that are ordered by August 1 and delivered to the Law School will be configured and ready for you to use on the first day of classes. Computers that are ordered after that date may not be delivered in time to be ready for you to use on the first day.

Computer Loans

Missoula Federal Credit Union offers computer loans to UM students purchasing computers from the University Bookstore at reduced rates. Students who purchase a computer through Richards Computer are also eligible for Missoula Federal Credit Union computer loans under an alternate loan program. Also, financial aid funds may be available for purchasing a computer. Contact Connie Bowman at the UM Financial Aid office for information about adding funding for a computer purchase to your financial aid package.
