Admissions—Visiting Students

The School of Law accepts third-year students (Visiting Students) as space permits for admission for their final year of law study transferring credit to their parent law schools to fulfill the requirements for the Juris Doctor degree. Visiting Applicants must submit all application materials through LSAC's Credential Assembly Service (CAS) and follow the Service’s instructions and procedures to ensure their applications are complete.

Application and Fee - Applicants must submit an electronic application and a $60 application fee.

Personal Statement and Resumé - Applicants must attach to their electronic applications a resumé and a personal statement of no more than 800 words describing the applicant’s interest in studying at the University of Montana School of Law.

Official Transcript - Applicants must submit a current official transcript showing a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale during the first two years of study at an accredited law school.

Notification from Parent School - Applicants must submit official notification from the parent institution approving the third-year nondegree program, the transferability of law credits earned at the University of Montana School of Law, and verifying the applicant's good standing and eligibility to continue the study of law at that institution.

Financial Aid - Visiting law students at the University of Montana School of Law must arrange for financial aid through their home institution. The UM Financial Aid Office will cooperate with the disbursal of the home institution's aid through a consortium agreement. Visiting students will not be considered for Title IV financial aid. Visiting students pay tuition to the University of Montana and financial aid is based on UM's expenses.

Visiting students may not enroll in required courses except with permission of the instructor. Limited enrollment elective courses will be open first to continuing Montana students.
