Professor Patterson teaches Legal Ethics, Family Law, Workers Compensation, Local Government Law, and Elder Law.
For many years, he has been General Counsel to the Montana Association of Counties. He chaired the Montana State Bar Ethics Committee between 1972 and 1992, and is now a member of and special counsel to that committee and is liaison to the Commission on Practice of the Supreme Court of Montana. He also serves on the Montana Bar Elder Assistance Committee.
Professor Patterson serves as an appellate mediator in cases on appeal to the Montana Supreme Court. He is a charter member of the American Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers and the American Bar Association Center for Professional Responsibility; he has authored numerous ethics opinions and participates as an expert in professional matters. This year he has been appointed Reporter to the recently created Commission on Judicial Conduct. Professor Patterson additionally provides professional responsibility advice and opinions to public prosecutors and other local government officials.
Professor Patterson received his J.D. from the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University and his LL.M. from The University of Michigan Law School.
