UMConnect student email

UMConnect is official email for all University of Montana students and is hosted by Microsoft. Students activate their UMConnect accounts at www.umt.edu/umconnect using their NetID and password. Password problems may be directed to IT Central, 406-243-HELP (4357).

Microsoft is upgrading UM student email from Live@Edu to Microsoft Office 365 through a three phase process. The first two phases were completed during Fall Semester 2013 and included the following changes:

  • Microsoft has removed UM branding.
  • Mailbox size increased from 10G to 25G.
  • Attachment size increased from 20G to 25G.
  • A new Microsoft Metro User interface with a more intuitive layout and a modern look and feel.
  • OneDrive Pro is included in UMConnect accounts (formerly SkyDrive).
  • OneDrive Pro offers 25 GB of cloud-based storage.
  • Office Web Apps is available through OneDrive Pro.

The third phase began during Spring Semester 2014. During the first step, Microsoft synchronized UMConnect and NetID passwords. This means that students use their NetID password to login to their UMConnect accounts.

What is Office 365?

Office 365 is a product and services bundle from Microsoft that includes Microsofts online services as well as domain administration tools. This platform enables additional account storage space and increased vendor support from Microsoft.

Who will be affected?

All UM student accounts will be transitioned to the Office 365 platform.

When is the transition happening?

The first phase of the transition to Office 365 was completed on August 22, 2013. The second phase was completed on December 20, 2013. The third phase will be completed during Spring of 2014.

Why is UM transitioning to Office 365?

Microsoft ended Live@edu service in September 2013.  All Live@Edu accounts are being transitioned to Office 365.

What are the benefits of migrating to Office 365?

Mailbox capacity increased from 10G to 25G. Attachment size increased from 20G to 25G. Phase two results in a fresh look and new features. Searching for and communicating with fellow classmates will be much easier. OneDrive Pro is now available through UMConnect. Also, Microsoft Office Web Apps (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote) is available through OneDrive Pro (formerly SkyDrive).

Will I still access my email the same way?

Students will continue to log in through UM servers using their NetID and password.

Do I need to do anything to be ready for Office 365?

Minimum requirements are Internet Explorer 9 and if Outlook is used to access the account, Office 2007 or 2011 or greater is needed.

How do I access Office Web Apps?

Access to Office Web Apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) is available through OneDrive Pro in your UMConnect account.
