Student email overview

GrizMail is UM’s official student email system. GrizMail accounts are easy to use. Umontana aliases are generated for students as soon as they apply to the University. Students access their GrizMail accounts at the GrizMail web page using their NetID and password.

Umontana aliases are in the following form: firstname.lastname@umontana.edu

Students should give this alias to University email contacts for University-related business.

  • How do students locate their NetID and email information?
    • Students may log into CyberBear (personal information section) or OneStop (click on "What is my NetID?") to locate their NetID and email information.
  • How do students change/reset NetID passwords?
    • An online password change/reset option for the NetID password is available to students through OneStop. In order for students to reset their passwords, they must establish an answer to a security question first. It is recommended that students do this the first time they login to OneStop. The online password change/reset pertains to all NetID logins: Blackboard, Library remote resources, OneStop, IT computer lab log-ins, campus wireless access, as well as GrizMail.
  • Why should students use GrizMail?
    • GrizMail serves as the official means of communication between students and The University of Montana. Important University business is conducted via this email account, including routine information about registration, tuition and fees notifications, and urgent announcements and notices from President Dennison and the UM administration. In addition, GrizMail is an easy way for students to quickly and efficiently correspond with professors and other University personnel.
  • How long are GrizMail accounts active?
    • GrizMail accounts are offered to all enrolled university students. Once a student is no longer enrolled, this GrizMail account remains active until the 3rd week of the semester that follows your final semester. For example, if your last semester is Spring Semester 2009, your account will be deactivated during the third week of Fall Semester 2009. At that time, your email resources will no longer be available to you.
  • How do you archive your GrizMail if you are not returning for the next semester?
    • If you plan to graduate or leave UM, we encourage you to archive important email and contact information from your GrizMail account prior to the third weeke of the semester that follows your final semester. For information in archiving your GrizMail email, please visit the IT Central Tips & Tools web page.
  • How can I retain my GrizMail if I am associated with the University but not officially registered?
    • Students who are associated with UM (study abroad through a non-UM sponsored program, military leave, thesis work) may meet the requirements for a Student Affiliate which would allow you to maintain access to your GrizMail (and other NetID-based services).  However, you must apply for Student Affiliate status prior to the 15th class day of the semester to retain those services.   After the third week of Fall or Spring semester, these requests cannot be accommodated. International students should contact Jeanne Loftus and previously registered students should contact Bonnie Holzworth.  Please provide detailed information on how you will be associated with the University while you are not a registered student.
