Matt Riley

NOTE: Matt begins his duties as CIO at The University of Montana on April 8th.

As UM’s new Chief Information Officer, I am eager to learn more about the technology and information services needs of The University of Montana.

  • Stanford University, School of Humanities and Sciences (May 2007 thru March 2013)
  • University of Redlands (August 1991 thru May 2007)

I grew up in higher education IT, starting as a programmer/analyst at Redlands. I have held systems management, network management, enterprise services and several director positions before coming to the UM. My most recent position at Stanford was the top IT leadership role for Stanford's largest academic unit, the School of Humanities and Sciences.

I want IT to provide responsive, flexible, helpful and creative technology-related services for the University. To that end, IT strives to build confidence in services through our project successes, ability to secure university data, ability to provide access to technology and information, and through our efforts to integrate IT strategy with UM strategy. All of our activities should be characterized with great customer service.

I dislike inflexible, static processes and policy that put IT in the unenviable position of saying 'no' too often. I prefer creative, collaborative projects that bring together the infrastructure, services offerings and talent of central IT with other IT organizations and their unique project and support situations. I look to increase job satisfaction for the great people in IT roles throughout campus.

The Office of the CIO leads IT strategy at UM. Through the efforts of previous CIOs Loey Knapp and Ray Ford, along with a team from central and distributed IT units, an IT strategic plan exists and is being implemented. A new IT governance structure—the IT Senate—launched in December 2012.

It is truly a great time to be coming on board as the CIO. I feel privileged to join the team and honored to lead. I welcome questions and feedback as we chart the course for IT together. Email me at or call me at 243-6100 any time.

Fun Stuff

When I’m not advocating for IT at UM, you will find me enjoying the Montana lifestyle with my family (wife Beth, daughter Brooke and son Thomas). We enjoy skiing, hiking, fly fishing and all that Montana offers.
