Wireless Access Student & Employee Access The University of Montana provides wireless access for students, faculty, and staff. Wireless access is available for mobile computing devices such as laptops. Prior registration is not necessary. Two options are available for connecting to the University’s wireless network. Cisco VPN (Virtual Private Network) VPN (Virtual Private Network) systems are used to create a secure connection between one computer and another computer or network. To ensure that all communications between the user’s wireless device and the wireless access point (WAP) are encrypted, and thus safe from being intercepted by other users, users must install and run a free VPN software package. Until Spring Semester 2008, Cisco VPN was UM’s only alternative for wireless access. Using the Cisco VPN requires a software download to your computer. You can download the VPN software by clicking the link above or by visiting IT Central in Social Science 120. WPA2 Enterprise WPA2 was created in response to weaknesses in previous wireless access systems, and provides access for computers, networks, and other hand-held devices. There are two types of WPA: Personal and WPA2 Enterprise. WPA2 Enterprise is implemented at UM. Personal: WPA2 personal uses a pre-shared key (or password) and was designed for home and small office use. WPA2 Enterprise: Used for more advanced authentication schemes, allowing for large organizations to support authentication for thousands of users, like UM. Using WPA2 Enterprise is available internally on newer laptops and other devices, and does not require a software download. Configuration Instructions...
Please look for UM wireless signs on campus which indicate areas of access. For assistance with VPN installation or configuring your laptop for WPA2 Enterprise, contact IT Central, located at Social Science 120, or via phone at 243-HELP (x4357). |
