FLBS conducts and publishes basic research in ecology and ecosystem science. Owing to the complex and often seemingly dense nature of scientific papers, the scientists at FLBS routinely produce "white papers" that summarize the research in lay terms.
Our objective in producing white papers is to inform people of the management and policy implications of our research so that ecosystem goods and services will be better conserved.
The current white paper series is focused on how our research supports wild salmon conservation around the North Pacific Rim.
Two major challenges to conserving and restoring wild salmon are knowing how many fish a river is producing and estimating how many fish a river could produce naturally...
As rivers enter an unconstrained reach from a canyon section, the waters slow...depositing sediment and allowing riparian plants to establish and grow. It is the ecological processes in unconstrained flood plain reaches which are responsible for most of the diversity and productivity of river systems.
Today, salmon face impacts from a range of human activities. Each activity by itself will not decimate wild Pacific salmon, but the cumulative stresses that wild Pacific salmon face are daunting...
