Grief and Loss

The staff members of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) of Curry Health Center are trained in grief counseling and are prepared to assist grieving students and their friends.

Appointment priority is given to bereaved students.

Grief

Answers to your questions about grief and grief counseling are just a phone call away. Please call CAPS for assistance at 243-4711.

When groups of students are affected by loss, as, for example, when death claims a fraternity brother, athlete, club member, or dorm resident, our staff will provide group debriefing or grief counseling upon request. Students who are concerned about the extreme or persistent grief response of a friend may consult with us as well, for advice about helping or to initiate an outreach process by a CAPS staff member.

CAPS also provides a Bereavement Group during the academic year for students who need more support or who may be dealing with longer term issues associated with loss. Our staff can also assist with requests to lower credit loads or we may advocate with faculty to have requirements forgiven or postponed.

CAPS is well connected to the Association of Campus Ministers and can help out-of-town students find appropriate pastoral counseling at their request.
