Course Description:

Job hunting is never easy.  It's even more difficult to get the job you really want if you don't know how to present yourself as a great match for the job you're going after. You might have the perfect skills and excellent experience, yet not get the job.  Why?  It's usually because it's not easy for your prospective employer to know this based on the resume you present.  This course will teach you how to write powerful, targeted cover letters and resumes that get noticed and moved into the interview pile. Students will also learn the do's and don'ts of using the internet when job hunting, as well as tips and techniques for giving an exceptional interview.  All required materials will be provided in class or via online access.  If you need a job, or want a better one, this course will give you the competitive edge you need.

By the end of the course, you will have a much stronger resume and cover letter tailored to the job that you hope to land.  Also, you'll gain an understanding of how to leverage the power of LinkedIn and other social media to help find and secure your preferred position.

In this class, students will learn:

  • How employers view cover letters and resumes to choose who gets an interview
  • What to put on your resume, what not to, and and how to organize it to your best advantage
  • How to prepare a compelling and powerful resume (that is 100% truthful)
  • How a cover letter compliments a resume, and what should go in it
  • How to use LinkedIn before, during and after your job hunt to increase your job prospects
  • How to prepare for an interview, conduct yourself during and what to do after
  • The do's and don'ts of social media that can increase (or kill) your chances of getting the job

Karen Porter is a Missoula native with 25 years of marketing experience.  She spent 10 years heading up marketing functions for two multi-billion dollar companies where she reviewed hundreds of resumes and interviewed dozens of candidates each year.  She brought her real-world hiring experiences to her students at the University of Montana where she has helped scores of students land internships and jobs.  Karen is passionate about the topic of "Marketing YOU" and helping people align their skills and experience to help them land the jobs they want and deserve.
