Originally founded in 1966, Missoula College moved to its present East Campus location in 1968 with construction of the Administration Building at 909 South Ave. W. The MC West Campus, located at 3639 South Ave. W. with the Trade and Technology Building, was constructed in 1971. Then in 1978, the Health and Business Building was added to the East Campus.
Missoula College joined the Montana University System in 1987 and became an academic unit of UM in 1994. The state Board of Regents changed the name to Missoula College in 2012 to promote the institution and its mission to serve all Montanans.

In autumn 2002, MC enrolled 930 students. That number swelled to 2,800 in autumn 2011.
