The University of Montana has published the Final Environmental Assessment for the proposed biomass gasifier and heat recovery boiler including associated biomass fuel and combustion product conveyance and processing equipment adjacent to the existing Heating Plant, 840 Connell Ave., N1/2 of the NE1/4 of Section 27, Township 13N, Range 19W. This notice of the Final Environmental Assessment is to fulfill the requirements of the Montana Environmental Protection Act(MEPA).

AIR QUALITY PERMIT & PUBLIC NOTICE

Missoula City County Air Pollution Control Program


The University of Montana submitted an application for an Air Quality Permit on April 6, 2011 for the proposed biomass plant addition to the Missoula City-County Health Department. An Air Quality Permit is required prior to construction. The application is available for review at the Missoula County Health Department as well as the link provided below. Public review and comments regarding the application and the draft air quality permit will be accepted by the Missoula City-County Health Department.

Air dispersion modeling show the emissions from the proposed biomass plant to compliant with the ambient air quality standards for Missoula.

The University of Montana is still seeking written public input on proposals for the Proposed Biomass Boiler Addition Project. The Proposed Project area is located at the University of Montana Heating Plant, Missoula, Montana. Comments regarding this Proposed Project will be used for development of the Montana Environmental Protection Act (MEPA) Environmental Assessment Document and reviewed to determine major issues and in developing alternatives or design features relating to the project. Written scoping comments will be accepted until March 1, 2011. Written Scoping Comments should be addressed to:

The University is considering converting its current natural gas fired boiler system to a new system which uses forest biomass as its primary fuel. This project has not yet been approved by the Board of Regents. We are seeking comments on the project from UM faculty, staff, students and the citizens of Missoula. Please join us in exploring the project and having your voice heard.

Biomass by The Numbers
December 3rd, 2010


The University of Montana will host a poster session explaining the details of a biomass plant that could heat the campus by efficiently burning small wood chips and reduce the university's carbon footprint.Comments will be reviewed before asking the Board of Regents to approve the sale of bonds for the project as soon as their Jan. 13 meeting. The Montana Kaimin has compiled a short of list of statistics from the proposal as an early overview.

EYE TO THE FUTURE

In conjunction with the University of Montana, McKinstry (a full-service design, build, operate and maintain (DBOM) firm) has completed preliminary designs of a biomass fueled combined heat and powerplant (CHP), to be located on the University of Montana's Missoula, Montana campus.
